Brain attended San Pedro High School in San Pedro, California, where he lettered in varsity football and baseball. In his senior year (1977), he batted .490 and was named first team all Marine League, first team all South Bay, first team all Los Angeles City and first team all state as a catcher. Brian received a baseball scholarship to Pepperdine University, and was selected in the fourth round of the June 1977 draft by the California Angels. He later signed with the Angels in July 1977.

In six Minor League seasons, he hit over .300 with 130 home runs. Brian was named on two minor league All-Star teams: Midwest League-1978 and Pacific Coast League-1981.

- Brian batted over .300, four out of six years with the Minnesota Twins, from 1988 to 1993.
- Played in the World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985.
- Played on and started on the World Champion Minnesota Twins in 1991. Led the team in hitting during the World Series with a .391 average.
- Named to the Topps All-Star team in 1992.
- In over 3,300 career at bats, Brian struck out only 183 times. In 1982, Brian struck out only 22 times in 502 at bats * while batting .307. Brian was always one of the toughest batters to strike out in the Major leagues.
- Brian finished with a career batting average of .295.
